The farm
is at 450 mt above sea level. On topographic peaks there is a calcareous
terrain, whilst on medium-low slopes and along the valleys there is a
predominance of marly clays. According to pedological aspects, the lands
are classified as “medium-texture brown soils”. They are balanced soils
and sometimes clay soils, with a good presence of main chemical elements
of fertility and with a clay content of 25-30%. As far as the agronomical
point of view, this kind of soil has a high potentiality for good quality
tree cultivations, such as fruit tree or vineyards. 20 hectares of Masseria del Feudo are cultivated with peaches, with 13 different
varieties, among which 5 late ripening yellow nectarines. Picking starts
at the end of August and finishes in October. Plants have an average age
of about 10 years.
Picking and selection is hand made. Yearly production
is about 600 tons. Olive groves are on a surface of 3 hectares where Nocellara and Carolea varietis are cultivated. From both of them an
excellent extra-virgin olive oil is obtained. Olives are hand-picked
during the first week of November. Production is around 3,000 litre per
year. There are also 3 hectares of 3 different varieties of late-ripening
plums. Picking takes place from the end of August till the first week of
October.
Cultivation of cereals is on a surface of 60
hectares, half of them in Mongibello and the rest in Veccia and Avena
where cereals cultivated there will become forage for livestock. Each year
there is a production of about 30 quintals per hectare. Both vineyards and
olive groves are organic. This means that we use organic manure,
fertilisers, and antiparasitics: stable manure, sulphur, copper and Withe
oils. The farm is certified by Ecocert Italia, which makes, during the
year, strict controls to all production lines.
Climate characteristics. Temperatures
are usually mild, also because most of lands face south-east. The most
prevalent wind is Scirocco, with frequent rains and low range of
temperature. Meteorological stations in Agrigento, Naro and Canicattì
often make an accurate monitoring of weather characteristics in order to
comprehend the environment characteristics which determine the quality of
agricultural products.
